It is refreshing to see in these dark days, when so many pubs are closing, a community fighting back. It has come to light recently that the locals and villagers of Charwelton, near Daventry, Nortamptonshire, have come together to form a co-operative with the hope of saving their local, The Fox and Hounds.

The pub dates back to the 19th century, when its original licencee was a Mr. Silas Checkley. It would have been used frequently by the railway workers involved in the construction of the nearby Catesby Tunnel in the 1890s, the 5th longest disused tunnel in the UK, at an impressive 1.7 miles in length. It would also have been used by travellers on the railway as it was only a short walk from the station which closed in the 1960s.
During the 1990s the pub was incredibly popular, sometimes proving difficult for diners to book a table, until its sale to Enterprise Inns when it started to go downhill, possibly due to inexperienced tenants, finally closing its doors in late 2012.

The present owners, Family Housing Ltd. entered into talks with the local society regarding the purchase of the pub, and so far the locals have raised over £120,000 towards their goal, offering shares from between £500 and £20,000 to potential investors with an anticipated 3.5% return on investment.
We at CompareCrazy sincerely hope that these guys raise the necessary funds to keep their pub in the community where it belongs, and wish them all the best.
