Since the beginning of cinema, viewers have been infatuated with films that revolve around cars. From animated feature films to action packed Hollywood hits, car films are always a crowd pleaser. To celebrate the genre, we’ve put together a list of the top five car flicks that every motor enthusiast should watch!
Gone in 60 Seconds
Starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, Gone in 60 Seconds was one of 2000’s hottest new releases. Directed by Dominic Sena, the film follows the story of a retired master car thief who is forced to get back into business in order to save his brother’s life. With the help of his crew, Memphis is on a mission to steal 50 luxury cars in just 96 hours. Packed full of action, police chases and a whole lot of revs, this film is a must watch for anyone with an appreciation for fast cars.
Cars
In 2006, Cars proved that the car genre isn’t just for adults! The adorable computer-animated comedy adventure flick was produced by Pixar Animated Studios under the watchful supervision of John Lasseter. The production was a huge success and was nominated for two Academy Awards, as well as taking out the Golden globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. What an achievement! For those that can’t get enough of the quirky four wheeled characters, Cars 2 was released in 2011.
The Fast and Furious
For fans of The Fast and Furious, the hits just keep on coming. The first film was released in 2001, with instalment number seven set to hit screens in 2015. Illegal street racing is the general topic of the first film, with storylines getting increasingly complex as the saga goes on!
Bullitt
Staring the dearing Steve McQueen, Bullitt is an absolute classic. The film was released in 1968 and falls into the crime action genre. McQueen plays a San Fransisco cop determined to get his hands on an underworld top dog who murdered a witness in McQueen’s protection. While the film is not as car oriented as some of the others on this list, it did pioneer the ‘car chase’ scene which is still celebrated as one of the best of all time. The 1968 Ford Mustang GT and 1968 Dodge Charger R/T also help boost Bullitt to our top five.
The Italian Job
Whether you love the 1969 version or are a diehard 2003 remake fan, The Italian Job remains a classic in the genre of car films. The later features an all-star cast led by Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. While the storylines are a little different, both revolve around a old heist and feature a whole lot of engine revving thrills!
